St. Nicholas is NOT insurance – we are a community-based 501(c)3 public charity. We help our clients by providing temporary, partial payment assistance for basic health care and medicine needed to stay healthy and employed over the long term. Our clients are not eligible for Medicaid and are required to pay a portion of the charges. Clients receive health services from our approved provider partners over the course of 6 months. The majority of our clients do not need additional help after that period and are able to take care of their own health needs going forward. Our ultimate goal is to improve our clients’ health in order to prevent work absenteeism, job loss, and the utilization of social services for survival.
We are a local organization supported 100% by local people – we receive absolutely no government funding or support. Our donors are “neighbors helping neighbors” – all donations stay right here in our local community.
St. Nicholas has been around for over 20 years. We began as a free clinic back in 1994. In 2013, the combined effects of Kentucky’s Medicaid expansion and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act facilitated our transition from a clinic to an assistance program. This change allowed us to continue our mission to operate as a health care safety net for the working uninsured of our community rather than closing our doors and leaving them without anywhere to turn for help.
Mission Statement: To provide access to quality health care for working adults who do not have the financial resources necessary to pay for private insurance and/or medical care.
St. Nicholas Healthcare Payment Assistance Program is governed by a Board of Directors, which plays a vital role in guiding our strategic direction, fulfilling our mission, using our financial resources wisely, and overseeing the activities of the Executive Director. The Executive Director is our only full-time employee and is responsible for carrying out daily operations.
